ROYO

Born in 1945 in Valencia, Spain, Royo’s artistic talent was recognized at the age of nine. His father hired private art tutors to instruct Royo in drawing, painting and sculpture. At 14, Royo entered the San Carlos Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Valencia. After getting his degree in Fine Arts, he continued to study and expand his talents. Winning many competitions gained him fame and led to his being commissioned to paint the royal portraits of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia.

Royo paints the land of his birth, to convey the light and intensity of Valencia and the Mediterranean. He perfected new ways to capture the light and shadow and to work on classical composition styles. His dramatic usage of color and texturing capture his subject matter with unique flair. Parallels can be drawn to the work of the European masters as well as that of the Spanish master of light, Joaquin Sorolla.

Royo conveys not merely image but mood and atmosphere as well. The connoisseur is compelled to compare Royo with the old masters. This is why his work holds so much appeal for today’s collector.
