March for Freedom, Circa 1999
Paint on plastic panel
24 x 48 in (60.96 x 121.92 cm)
In a complex composition containing beast, angels and protestors, a systematic arrangement of color-coded symbols reveals itself. Angelic armies in the heavens ride high above the assembled domesticated calvary that marches in unison with the gestural demonstrators. The road ahead will not be an easy one to navigate. Full of heartaches, death, fighting, despair, isolation, and misery, these participants know the score. They accept their fate but push on for the brighter future. This blissful outlook is not their own but reserved for those of future generations, sons and daughters, grandsons, and granddaughters- an unfathomed posterity for equality. The road to absolute freedom and justice has always been one of pain and suffering, yet the heavens look out over these political warriors, giving them confidence to march on. Part hieroglyphics, part urban shaman storytelling, this tale of past generations resonates in ears and minds of today’s freedom fighters. Yes, the road may rise up to meet you and the wind be at your back, but the chains of persecution still fall hard on the fields of oppression.
