Today we celebrate Buddha Purnima, the birth of Prince Siddharta Gautama, or Buddha.

Buddha was a philosopher who achieved enlightenment after 49 days of uninterrupted meditation under the Bodhi tree in Bodhgaya, discovering the key to ending ‘suffering’. He attested that ‘four noble truths’ held the solution.

Buddha is also the founder of Buddhism and preached the lessons of dharma, non-violence, harmony, kindness, and path to nirvana to the world.

The word ‘Purnima’ is Sanskrit for ‘full moon’, which explains why this holiday is celebrated on a full moon day and during the month of ‘Vaisakhi’ in Hindu/Buddhist lunar calendars.
