Salvador Dali was born May 11, 1904 in Figueres, Spain. He was an intelligent and creative child who displayed notable artistic abilities. Dali would go on to study art in Madrid and Barcelona where he assimilated a vast number of artistic styles.

It was not until the late 1920s, however, that two events brought about the development of Dali’s mature artistic style: his discovery of Sigmund Freud’s writings on the erotic significance of subconscious imagery and his affiliation with the Paris Surrealists, a group of artists and writers who sought to establish the “greater reality” of the human subconscious over reason.

As Dali's work evolved, his paintings depicted a dreamworld in which commonplace objects were juxtaposed, deformed, or otherwise metamorphosed in a bizarre and irrational fashion. Dali portrayed those objects in an extremely precise manner and in almost painfully realistic detail. His creations focused on themes of man's universe and sensations, sexual symbolism and ideographic imagery.

In the course of his long career, Dali successfully mastered sculpture, printmaking, fashion, advertising, writing, and, perhaps most famously, filmmaking in his collaborations with Luis Buñuel and Alfred Hitchcock.

Dali is remembered and celebrated for his flamboyant personality, eccentric style, and above all his ability to create something unknown which totally changed the way art was defined.
