Purvis Young: PROTEST AND PRAISE

Purvis Young: PROTEST AND PRAISE

New River Fine Art presents Purvis Young: PROTEST AND PRAISE.  Purvis Young was an urban storyteller, an artist of the street who transformed the debris of our throwaway society into compelling works of art reverberating with inner city realities, social injustice, protests, war, passion, praise, and hope for a better life. The worn refuse that serves as Young’s substrate has an emotional energy that reinforces the themes of his work.

Young’s work is now included in the collections of over 60 of the nation’s finest institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, American Folk Art Museum, the Bass Museum, the Corcoran Gallery, the High Museum in Atlanta and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

PROTEST AND PRAISE marks the fourth exhibition of Young’s work by New River Fine Art.  The exhibition title, PROTEST AND PRAISE, references a major theme in Young’s work.  Figures with their arms raised, in protest or praise, are seen throughout the artist’s oeuvre.  Young painted the world he lived in, capturing astounding beauty in the harsh and gritty reality of the ghetto.  His oeuvre speaks with such force and candor that Purvis Young’s appeal transcends the world of pre-labeled art movements, propelling his works to the highest levels of Contemporary Art.
